Massad Ayoob wrote for Black Belt and other martial arts publications extensively in the 1970s before switching to full-time instruction in weaponry and the use of deadly force through the Lethal Force Institute.

The Lethal Force Institute, co-founded by Ayoob in 1981, is a "threat management school" that emphasizes responsible, advanced training in the use of defensive deadly force by private citizens as well as military and law-enforcement personnel.

His unarmed combat work is primarily in police-style defensive tactics, and he appears on the crime-prevention and empty-hand self-defense segment of each episode of Personal Defense TV, which airs on the The Sportsman Channel.
