Black Belt contributor James Keating began studying judo in 1965. By 1967 he had migrated to Okinawan karate. It was karate that captured his attention for the next two decades. In the process, Keating began cross-training in several related disciplines such as kempo, jujutsu and kobudo weaponry. In 1982 Keating began studying the Philippine tribal fighting arts. This endeavor opened the doors to other Southeast Asian fighting methods.

By the early 1990s, Keating had established Combat Technologies Inc., a tactical business employing both modern and ancient principles. Keating’s “Riddle of Steel” seminar takes place annually in Hell’s Canyon, Oregon. The Riddle of Steel Knife Camp has been Keating’s flagship event for more than a decade. Keating offers insights into both Western and Asian fighting arts. His prowess with the American bowie knife is well known in knife-fighting circles. Keating is also a successful knife designer with several models currently available.
